Manuel Neuer: Safe as always but lucky to escape punishment for dangerous challenge on Higuain. 7

Philipp Lahm: Gave his customary flawless display at right-back. 7

Jerome Boateng: Rock solid at heart of Germany defence. 8

Mats Hummels: Lack of pace was exploited by Argentina but made some crucial interventions. 6

Benedikt Howedes: Solid in defence though rarely got forward. 7

Christoph Kramer: Big night ended prematurely through injury. 6

Bastian Schweinsteiger: Protected the area in front of Germany's back four. 8

Thomas Muller: Struggled to make an impact in the final third. 5

Toni Kroos: Gifted Higuain a sitter and wasted a good second-half chance. 5

Mesut Ozil: Dangerous in possession but too often on the periphery. 6

Miroslav Klose: Shackled by Demichelis and Garay. 5

Ezequiel Garay: Rarely flustered by any of Germany's attacking four. 7

Marcos Rojo: Another impressive display at left-back. 7

Lucas Biglia: Helped Mascherano shut the door on Germany. Offered little going forward, though. 6

Javier Mascherano: Another fine display, denying Germany any space between the lines. 8

Enzo Perez: Too conservative in possession, meaning his contribution was limited. 6

Ezequiel Lavezzi: Offered little threat before being replaced at half-time. 5

Gonzalo Higuain: Wasted a first-half sitter on an off-night for the Napoli forward. 5

Lionel Messi: Rarely involved but occasional glimpses of quality to create opportunities. 6

Substitutes:

Sergio Aguero (on for Lavezzi 46) Carried more threat than Lavezzi but still looked slightly off the pace. 6

Rodrigo Palacio (on for Higuain 78): Made a hash of a glorious extra-time chance. 5

Fernando Gago (on for Perez 86): Offered little despite fresh legs in extra-time. 5
