The Team Of The Tournament So Far

Three Spaniards, two Germans, one Ronaldo and no Englishmen in an XI constructed from a complicated algorithm. Daniel Agger and Samir Nasri make it...

Based on the group stages, www.Squawka.com has analysed the performance of each player using the Squawka Player Performance Index - an algorithm that crunches over 2.5million on-ball actions to definitively show the highest performing players in all positions through the disciplines of attack, possession and defence.

After the first round of games, we were a tad confused to see Sean St Ledger in the XI but after three games there's no sign of him or indeed any other Irishman. There's also no room for an Englishman - Steven Gerrard rated as the 26th best midfielder using their complicated algorithm.

We won't pretend to know how they work it all out but the results are as follows (with Squawka points in brackets)...

Goalkeeper: Manuel Neuer, Germany (138.59)

Right-Back: Alvaro Arbeloa, Spain (187.23)

Centre-half: Mats Hummels, Germany (248.02)

Centre-half: Daniel Agger, Denmark (226.93)

Left-back: Martin Olsson, Sweden (190.49)

Defensive midfielder: Daniele De Rossi, Italy (203.73)

Central midfielder: Xavi Hernandez, Spain (263.13)

Central midfielder: Sergio Busquets, Spain (235.94)

Forward: Alan Dzageov, Russia (191.66)

Forward: Samir Nasri, France (164.83)

Forward: Ronaldo, Portugal (139.82)

The boys from Squawka say: "After the group stages there are some clear winners in terms of performance. Players like Xavi (best overall player so far), Mats Hummels (2nd), Daniel Agger (5th) and Daniele De Rossi (6th) have been consistently high scoring on our algorithm but it was after the Spain v Croatia game that Sergio Busquets propelled himself into this team and into third place on our overall scoring list.

"Ronaldo isn't very highly ranked compared to the other players in our team and was nowhere near making this team but his masterful display against the Netherlands ensures that he is now the highest ranked forward.

"The big talking point is at left-back with the inclusion of Blackburn's Martin Olsson who narrowly pipped Spanish sensation Jordi Alba. Olsson was not only the highest scoring left back but also scored highly in attack, defence and possession."

Squawka is a unique TV companion web app. They provide football statistics, information and conversation all in one place, offering second screen simplicity.

Twitter and Facebook integration will enable users to track the conversation surrounding football matches and players from different leagues all in one place, alongside team news, line-ups, live action and analysis, results and latest in-play odds. It will be completely free to use.

Forget the statistics though, who's in your team of the tournament so far? Let us know via the usual box...
