The hosts enjoyed their first win of 2013 as Rhys Bennett's 18th-minute effort proved enough to sink the struggling Gulls.

By that stage Torquay had already wasted their best chance of the afternoon, gifted to former Rochdale loanee Rene Howe after a slip by Shane Cansdell-Sherriff, yet Josh Lillis came to the hosts' rescue.

Taylor took charge of the Torquay side in the absence of manager Martin Ling, who is recovering from a debilitating illness, and he expects to be in the dugout when they go to Aldershot on Tuesday.

"I expect to be in charge for Tuesday's game - as far as I know there has been no change in that situation," he said.

"I've been told to take the reins until told otherwise and I'll continue to do that.

"I was disappointed with the result but I can't fault the players' effort and endeavour. The reality now is that while effort and endeavour is fine, we need to get some points on the board.

"We had the best chance of the game early on but Rene has put us in many a good position with his goals so we can't be too hard on him for the fact he didn't manage to score on this occasion.

"They broke away and scored after that and from then on it was an uphill battle.

"I thought both sides tried to play football the right way, there was not too much direct play. But they got the breakthrough, we didn't take ours and ended up fighting for it for the rest of the game."

ime to play Liverpool players in their natural positions? I agree, but surely the subs' bench isn't big enough for all of them?
