Kris Commons: Always enjoys facing Aberdeen

After arriving from Derby County at the end of January 2011's transfer window, Commons opened his Celtic account five minutes into his debut against Aberdeen in a League Cup semi-final.

The Scotland international looked up and spotted Jamie Langfield off his line before sending a sublime chip into the far corner.

He has scored 26 times since and admitted playing Aberdeen always brings back memories of that memorable Hampden debut.

"The game had barely started and I picked the ball up, and before I had received it I had a little look and saw the keeper was off his line," recalled Commons in an exclusive interview with the matchday programme. "I was in a confident mood and thought why not?

"It was early on the game when you think anything can happen and it dropped in nicely. It was a whirlwind. I don't think I walked through the door until the day before the game and was then thrown into the starting XI.

"I didn't really know anyone in the team but it was a great way to start my career. Some people said it was a cross but they had obviously not seen my previous goals. Most people who have seen me in training would know that I had meant it.

"I didn't really think about it too much after the game. When you first get your foot in the door, you just want to get to know the lads, see what they're like and make sure it's a good group. I knew the manager from his playing days so I was made very welcome and it was easy to bed myself in and get off to a good start.

"It was a good way to begin my Celtic career and certainly looking back now, it was a good choice coming up to Celtic. It's a good few years ago now but it's been a whirlwind couple of years up here."

Commons has made a habit of scoring against the Dons and it was he who struck the only Parkhead goal when the two sides met on the opening day of this season.

He is taking nothing for granted, however, adding: "This season has been a bit of a lottery. You're not sure who is going to win every weekend. It's quite unpredictable. Teams have gone on good runs and then lost a few on the bounce.

"At the start of the season, we were looking to try and win every game. In the league, we have been up and down with results, but consistency is a big thing in this league and if we do get one bad result, we do manage to get back on the wagon and win the next couple.

"From the very first game of the season I played against Aberdeen, I thought they were going to be a good outfit but most teams who play against us try that little bit harder to try and beat us."
