Phil Parkinson: Hoping to gatecrash the play-offs

Bradford boss Parkinson guided his League Two minnows to the Capital One Cup final last month, only to see them lose 5-0 to Swansea.

But he was rewarded for the remarkable run which saw them beat Wigan, Arsenal and Aston Villa with the Outstanding Managerial Achievement award at the Football League awards on Sunday night.

"I'm very honoured, it's a great award to get," Parkinson said.

"Obviously my name is on the award but it's a team award, not just the team on the pitch but off the pitch as well.

"Belief, hard work and desire can take you a long way in this game. We were fully aware when we were playing Arsenal on that cold Tuesday evening that their ability was way above what we had. But the desire, togetherness and spirit we had shone through."

The Bantams now have eight matches left to try to haul themselves into the play-off spots.

"We've got a tough challenge," added Parkinson. "Obviously the cup run has detracted from that. I'd love to say we could have done it all but sometimes it's not possible - we've played 62 games already this season.

"But the lads have been terrific. What we have said to them is that when the last whistle goes after the last game of the season, we are going to have given absolutely everything to get into the play-off picture.

"If we haven't then the money we earned from the cup run will enable us to have a good go next year."

he uber commercialisation of the 90s has led to the point where this overly familar, try hard, jolly hockey sticks type fronts up a major football match on a weekly basis. Unlike the great presenters of yesteryear, I doubt he would even recognise the scent of Brut.
