Stanley secured another season in the Football League with a 1-0 win over Bristol Rovers at the weekend but the club have struggled financially this season, with Marsden having had to dip into his own pockets after the players were paid their wages for March two weeks late.

But Marsden is hopeful the club will be able to receive further funding to help them compete towards the top of the table next year.

"To do that we need investment," he told the Lancashire Telegraph. "We would have needed some just to keep things ticking over but we want to bring in more to take this club to the next level too.

"In the last week I've been driving up and down the country meeting people who are interested. There has been interest in Lancashire, in the south and also abroad.

"This is my mission now and something I'm working very hard on. It won't be for the want of trying, and I'd be willing to speak to anyone who might be interested.

"Between us, the board have put in £300,000 over the last season and in the last two months I have personally put a significant amount in.

"But we are just the custodians of the club. I won't be here in 20 years' time and hopefully I can pass it on to someone who can take the club to that next level.

"We want to get to a stage where we are at worst in the top 10 in League Two and challenging for promotion.

"I think it's not realistic to say we could be a Championship club with the fan base we have, but I think with investment we can sustain a mid-table League One side."
