Paul Dickov: Feels the time was right to leave Oldham

The 40-year-old was installed as Rovers' new boss on Monday, three months after he quit at Boundary Park just days after the Latics' shock FA Cup victory over Liverpool.

But their league form was poor and the former Scotland international battled with problems behind the scenes, which included his backroom staff being placed on gardening leave.

Dickov is delighted to be back in the dugout and believes his Boundary Park stint will stand him in good stead.

"There is a consensus out there that it didn't end right," he said. "From my point of view it did. I sat down with Simon Corney, who I still see now, and spoke about it.

"I had a fantastic two and a half years at Oldham, but it got to the point where I couldn't do my job properly.

"I had my staff taken away from me, I had no scouting network. Because of the fact that I couldn't carry out what I wanted to carry out, it was probably best that I resigned.

"That's in the past, what I will say is that it has made me a much better manager."

Does it make your writers feel like men? F365 might suggest that I 'lighten up', but it is genuinely traumatic for people who have been oppressed all their lives to be the butt of jokes, and to be told...

ou can't blame De Gea for wanting to leave, he has enough to do in front of goal as it is as well as taking on the role of Man Utd's version of Derek Acorah in trying to contact and organise a defence that isn't there.
