Nigel Adkins: Spent money earlier in the summer

Many Royals fans are angry boss Nigel Adkins did not add to his squad before the window closed on Monday, while the club instead sold winger Jimmy Kebe and defender Adrian Mariappa to Crystal Palace.

But Adkins remains keen to bring in a striker and Hammond says Reading will be back in the market when the loan window re-opens next week.

"We did three very good deals early on in the window, bringing in Wayne Bridge, Royston Drenthe and Danny Williams," Hammond said.

"Supporters love deadline day and everything that goes with it, but unfortunately we were not in a position to add anyone.

"In the Championship the emergency loan window opens in a week and then we will have another opportunity.

"We will see where we are in a week but we still have a very strong squad which came down from the Premier League anyway."

Reading have held talks with free agent former Liverpool midfielder Mohamed Sissoko following his release from Paris Saint-Germain, but a deal to bring him to the Madejski looks unlikely at the moment.

"We had discussions with him but he's a free agent and he has been a top player so he has a number of options," added Hammond.

"All players want to play in the Premier League, but we are waiting to see where we are with it."
