Sammer: We can do better

Bayern Munich's 2-0 win over Hannover may have taken the defending champions up to second in the Bundesliga, but it was anything but to the liking of their director of sport Matthias Sammer.

Matthias Sammer: Expects more from the European champions

The Bavarians needed 45 minutes to get warmed up against the Reds and Sammer slammed the team's apparent lack of hunger and desire.

"We are playing lethargically at times, playing football without any emotion and just going through the motions," he said.

"When you are struggling in the first half, then you've got to help each other out in the tackles and bring a bit more emotion into play.

"Instead, we are too relaxed and just watch - we've won five titles in the last 15 months, Franck Ribery's been named Best Player in Europe and he'll probably also win the Ballon d'Or.

"It's not that we are not working, just we're not showing any emotions at all."

Plenty of emotion was shown in the dressing room by coach Pep Guardiola during the interval at the Allianz Arena, but Sammer suggests such interventions should not be necessary.

"It's not on that Pep has to raise his voice all the time," Sammer said to reporters.

"Our coach always has to give a heated speech before we get going."

Sammer jumped to the defence of the new coach, whom he feels is taking too much responsibility away from the players, who are taking advantage by not delivering the goods with the same degree of hunger they had last season.

"It's all about Pep. Pep here, Pep there, Pep's great, Pep's poor - we're finding it all great because we're no longer in the limelight and this affects you subconsciously," added Sammer.

"We're all hiding behind the coach."

may well get slated by other United fans for this, but out of the three contenders, I'd far prefer Liverpool to win the title. Yes some elements of their fanbase can be a bit OTT, yes they're our biggest rivals and yes it will make our poor season feel even more like the end of an era (Fergie's gone, Liverpool are back on top). However I just have to applaud Brendan Rodgers and the way he's turned Liverpool around in just a couple of seasons. It...

ooray! We are all excited now, we beat a very mediocre team! With all due respect to WHU supporters, not winning that game shouldn't even be a consideration. This is the problem, there is no winning mentality at the Emirates - we're all congratulating ourselves beating a team that we have a winning record against.

I

s this meant to be an aspiration for United supporters? Moyes mediocrity strikes again. I see the Bayern boys don't want to sign for him, and his reputation amongst the senior European coaches make other key signings unlikely.
