Marco Russ gave Frankfurt a 14th-minute lead which was quickly cancelled out by Timo Werner.

Sebastian Rode's foul on Ibrahima Traore gave the hosts a late chance to win the game, only for Vedad Ibisevic to miss the target.

Freiburg's winless start extended to a sixth game on Sunday after they were held to a 1-1 draw at home to Hertha Berlin.

Admir Mehmedi gave them the lead in the sixth minute, but Per Skjelbred levelled before half time for the visitors, earning them a valuable point.

Freiburg hit the post in the last minute but they remain in the bottom two with just three points.
