The Valley: Pitch was waterlogged on Saturday

The Championship clash was called off only a couple of hours before kick-off on Saturday due to a waterlogged pitch.

A club statement said: "Charlton Athletic would like to apologise to all supporters who made the journey to The Valley on Saturday afternoon to find the game had been postponed after a 1pm pitch inspection.

"The club was confident that the suitable precautions had been taken at the start of the week and that it would go ahead.

"The ground staff did not deem it necessary to call in a match official to conduct a preliminary pitch inspection on the Friday prior to the game against the Tykes, as they were confident the surface was in a better condition than at a comparative stage before the recent matches against Brighton & Hove Albion and Sheffield Wednesday."

The Addicks are holding a pitch inspection on Monday afternoon ahead of Tuesday night's rearranged FA Cup game with Oxford, but are "expecting the tie to go ahead as planned".

resumably, you wanted to keep the version of Downing that was never seen at Anfield. The one that another manager has managed to re-create. The one you passed over.

he uber commercialisation of the 90s has led to the point where this overly familar, try hard, jolly hockey sticks type fronts up a major football match on a weekly basis. Unlike the great presenters of yesteryear, I doubt he would even recognise the scent of Brut.
