The 27-year-old, who can play in either defence or midfield, made 37 appearances for Newcastle last season.

However, he now appears to be surplus to requirements at St James' Park.

Newly-relegated Wigan, who won the FA Cup last season, are hopeful of making Perch their fourth signing of the summer, after recruiting left-back Stephen Crainey, midfielder Chris McCann, and centre-back Thomas Rogne.

Perch joined Newcastle from Nottingham Forest in 2010 on a four-year deal meaning he is now entering the final year of his contract.

He has made 80 appearances overall for the Magpies, scoring one goal.
