Republic of Ireland midfielder Glenn Whelan has been ruled out of tonight's match with Sweden through injury.

Glenn Whelan: Sustained an ankle injury

The Stoke ace has sustained an ankle problem ahead of the Group C World Cup qualifier in Stockholm.

Manager Giovanni Trapattoni had selected Whelan to start in the Friends Arena clash when he selected his team on Thursday.

Trapattoni could bring in James McCarthy as a replacement, to partner Paul Green in the middle of the park.
