Brendan Rodgers: Wants to get into Europe via the league

Brendan Rodgers: Wants to get into Europe via the league

Currently Liverpool are second behind Arsenal, who look set for a top-five finish which would rule them out.

That would than give Rodgers's side a chance of being picked to take up a slot in the qualifying stage of the Europa League.

But Rodgers says they don't want to go down that route.

"I've never thought of it, maybe we should get a couple of sendings off or bookings," the Liverpool boss told the Daily Mirror.

"There's a pride thing and we want to get into it with our performance level and it's highly unlikely we'd get that route [anyway].

"It's the top three countries and we're fourth. It's not something I would be keen on. I want to get there through the right means.

"If we have to have a year where we are not in it, it's going to give us an opportunity to push on.

"It was a long journey in the Europa League this year. Don't get me wrong, we enjoyed it and we were disappointed when we came out of it, but I think down the Fair Play route means the competition starts even earlier.

"I'd prefer to be in it by qualifying through the league or winning a trophy.

"If it's not that way then, we as a club are better suited to re-aligning our focus to domestic cups and the league."

may well get slated by other United fans for this, but out of the three contenders, I'd far prefer Liverpool to win the title. Yes some elements of their fanbase can be a bit OTT, yes they're our biggest rivals and yes it will make our poor season feel even more like the end of an era (Fergie's gone, Liverpool are back on top). However I just have to applaud Brendan Rodgers and the way he's turned Liverpool around in just a couple of seasons. It...

H

ooray! We are all excited now, we beat a very mediocre team! With all due respect to WHU supporters, not winning that game shouldn't even be a consideration. This is the problem, there is no winning mentality at the Emirates - we're all congratulating ourselves beating a team that we have a winning record against.

I

s this meant to be an aspiration for United supporters? Moyes mediocrity strikes again. I see the Bayern boys don't want to sign for him, and his reputation amongst the senior European coaches make other key signings unlikely.
