Global football icon Pele has joined the praise of Sir Alex Ferguson upon his retirement and described the Scot as his "idol".

Ferguson announced on Wednesday that he will retire later this month after 27 years in charge of Manchester United.

And Pele has paid tribute to the Premier League boss via his Twitter account.

"Sir Alex, you were my idol for a coach, and you are an example for all future generations," wrote the three-time World Cup winner.

"Sir Alex, you are a legend and your achievements are unlikely to ever be surpassed."
