Paul Dickov: Appointed new Doncaster boss

Paul Dickov believes there is no limit to what he can achieve at Doncaster after being appointed their new manager.

The 40-year-old was named as Brian Flynn's successor on a one-year rolling contract at the Keepmoat Stadium after the Welshman opted to revert to his development role following Rovers' npower League One title-winning campaign.

Dickov, who left Oldham in February, came out on top in a rigorous selection process and will lead the South Yorkshire outfit in the Championship next season.

And the former Scotland international believes his new side will be able to compete in the second tier.

"It's a challenge but a challenge I am going to embrace," he said.

"I am a very positive person and without setting any specific targets we will go into next season with momentum and a lot of confidence to do really well.

"I don't think we can put a ceiling on what we can achieve. It's a fantastic club with fantastic people, it's stable and that is something that I have been striving for.

"I could say that our aim is to stay in the division but I think that sends out a negative vibe straight away.

"You have got to set your bar high and you never know what you can achieve.

"Yes, we are going to have to get players with a real good quality, but the feel-good factor is already there."

Dickov was an early favourite for the job, but his appointment was still something of a surprise as former Blackpool and Blackburn manager Michael Appleton was reported to have landed the role.

But Dickov was chosen and he will learn from his difficult time with Oldham, where he resigned in early February just a week after guiding them to an FA Cup victory over Liverpool.

"For me it is exciting," he added. "This is something I feel ready for, I had two and a half years at Oldham which was fantastic for me, working to a strict budget and without a lot of resources.

"The stuff you learn from that is invaluable, I feel am I ready for this challenge."

The selection process was so involved that Dickov was only selected an hour before his unveiling late this afternoon.

And after he came out on top, Rovers chairman John Ryan is convinced he has got the right man.

"We have had a very arduous process to find our new manager," he said.

"We have gone through this process which has been finalised today and we have unanimously decided on a young, aggressive person who manages like he played.

"We knew it was a critical appointment having just got back into the Championship.

"We wanted someone who could take us on from where we are now and we were very impressed with Paul with the way he played against us for Oldham three times last season.

"We feel he has all the credentials to become a fantastic manager in years to come.

"He is very organised, very hard-working, very enthusiastic and although there was some very stiff competition he came out top, in a 14-point criteria and also in the interviews. We have done all we can to acquire the best manager we can for Doncaster.

"There was intense competition and Doncaster Rovers is now a coveted job whereas 20 years ago it maybe wasn't."

m only commenting on this (I don't care about Liverpool) because F365's twitter said I had call Matt Stanger a tw*t (which I don't agree with anyway) but I just wanted to be the first. Am I the first?

unday, Sunday. Will there be a fan of either team, who if they are winning after 80 mins, won't still be nervous? This could be anything from 0-0 to 5-5, and no one would bat an eye.
