Guus Hiddink: Staying in Dagestan

Guus Hiddink is to remain with Anzhi Makhachkala for a further season despite fans' protests against the Dutchman after last season fell short of expectations.

Anzhi, who are based in Dagestan, finished third in the Russian Premier League behind winners CSKA Moscow and Zenit St Petersburg, thereby missing out on the Champions League.

They reached the Russian cup final, where they were beaten on penalties by CSKA, and the quarter-finals of the Europa League.

All this was not enough to appease the fans who made clear their feelings towards Hiddink.

However, the 66-year-old on Monday confirmed to Voetbal International that he would remain with the club next season and has been promised funds to bring in reinforcements.

He said: "At the back we can use some strength and we need more productivity up front.

"Last season our squad was too thin to absorb injuries.

"Especially around international matches we lost several players for a long time.

"If the club wants to fulfil its ambitions, we should be better armed against that kind of adversity."

The former Chelsea and PSV Eindhoven boss has also targeted an improvement in their league position adding: "This season the bar will again be a little higher. The club wants to settle permanently at the top."

ou can't blame De Gea for wanting to leave, he has enough to do in front of goal as it is as well as taking on the role of Man Utd's version of Derek Acorah in trying to contact and organise a defence that isn't there.
