Martin O'Neill: Favourite for the Republic of Ireland job

Sky Bet make Martin O'Neill the odds-on favourite to replace Giovanni Trapattoni as Republic of Ireland boss following Giovanni Trapattoni's sacking.

The Italian boss has been relieved of his duties after a 1-0 loss in Austria all but ended Ireland's chances of qualifying for the World Cup in Brazil.

O'Neill was installed as the 5/6 favourite for the job on Wednesday morning with Trapattoni's exit widely anticipated and by the end of Wednesday those odds were 8/11.

Leeds boss Brian McDermott had been considered a lively outsider at 16/1 but has since been cut to just 6/1 while Mick McCarthy (10/1), Roy Keane (18/1) and Chris hughton (28/1) are other possible alternatives.

Sky Bet Football Trader Chris Spicer said: "O'Neill seems the obvious choice given his experience and availability and our punters tend to agree, with all the early money coming for him despite the short odds."

hould have stayed because we carried him for 6.5 years. And then he has a breakthrough season, and was gone soon after. MU fans, you would be as disgusted had C Ronaldo left in 2007 and not 2009.

ood grief. Someone guessed that the form English player at the moment might be in his national side with some other players? And that's espionage? Now if they discovered that Emile Heskey was going to be in the starting line up.... at right back.... THAT would be espionage. Give it a rest Roy.
