Franck Ribery: Bookmakers' favourite to win the Ballon d'Or

Franck Ribery has emerged as the new favourite to win the Ballon d'Or, replacing Lionel Messi at the head of Sky Bet's market.

The Frenchman was named UEFA's best player in Europe for 2012-13 after helping Bayern Munich land a historic treble last season.

Messi, who has won the award four successive times, was considered the initial front runner but has drifted out to 6/4 with the majority of stakes on Ribery (11/10).

Cristiano Ronaldo, who won the award as a Manchester United player in 2008, is third favourite at 8/1 with Real Madrid failing to win any silverware last season.

Gareth Bale is the only British player on the shortlist but has drifted out from 33/1 to 50/1.

Five Premier League players make the shortlist but are all considered outsiders, with last season's top scorer Robin van Persie the shortest odds from that group at 50/1.

Sky Bet's Football Trader Chris Spicer said: "We already had Ribery as second favourite but he has shortened across the industry, presumably due to Bayern's immense success and his UEFA award.

"Despite being short prices, Ribery and Messi have attracted a significant majority of the betting, suggesting it is very much a two-horse race."

hould have stayed because we carried him for 6.5 years. And then he has a breakthrough season, and was gone soon after. MU fans, you would be as disgusted had C Ronaldo left in 2007 and not 2009.

ood grief. Someone guessed that the form English player at the moment might be in his national side with some other players? And that's espionage? Now if they discovered that Emile Heskey was going to be in the starting line up.... at right back.... THAT would be espionage. Give it a rest Roy.
