Sky Bet go 7/1 for England to be knocked out of the 2014 World Cup in a penalty shoot-out as Roy Hodgson attempts to prevent more spot-kick heartbreak.

The Three Lions have crashed out of six of the last 10 major tournaments on penalties, prompting the England boss consider using a psychologist this summer, while Team Sky cycling chief Sir Dave Brailsford will also help with preparations.

While cynics fear the worst again amid tempered expectations for the World Cup, online bookmaker Sky Bet believe there is a 7/1 chance that Hodgson's men will see their campaign ended in a penalty shoot-out and 9/1 for them to be eliminated in extra-time.

For the more optimistic fans, England are also 7/1 to prevail in a shoot-out and 100/1 to win the tournament on penalties.

England head into the World Cup at their biggest ever pre-tournament price to lift the trophy at 28/1 and 9/4 third favourites to win Group D, which also contains Italy, Uruguay and Costa Rica.

Sky Bet's Head of Football Trading Paul Wiggins said: "We've done our maths and England's trend is quite remarkable compared the norm but we're certainly not getting caught up in the idea of a hoodoo.

"For those who are fearing further spot-kick misery, backing the 7/1 would be some consolation, although we'll be hoping the Three Lions go the distance to maintain the interest, especially given we've seen relatively little backing for Hodgson's men despite their hefty odds."

reat to see Tommy Rosicky getting some love. A wonderful player. Such a pity we lost so long to injury. I was so excited when we signed him, this resurgence only makes the absences seem more of a lost opportunity.
