Motherwell's John Sutton celebrates after scoring

Kilmarnock gave their hopes of avoiding the Scottish Premiership's relegation play-off spot a welcome boost with a 4-2 win over bottom side Hearts at Rugby Park.

An own goal by Hearts captain Danny Wilson set Killie on their way and a double by Kris Boyd, after Dale Carrick had brought Hearts level, seemed to put the home side out of sight.

A goal by Sam Nicholson briefly revived the contest for Hearts, before a Michael Gardyne strike sealed the valuable three points for Kilmarnock.

The victory lifts Kilmarnock to within three points of seventh-placed Hibernian, who drew 3-3 at home with Motherwell in Saturday's other Scottish Premiership fixture.

The clash was a thrilling one which saw John Sutton salvage a draw for Motherwell with a dramatic late equaliser, the striker heading in his second goal of the afternoon in stoppage time following a goalmouth scramble.

That strike denied Hibs what would have been a stunning comeback win as they battled back from 2-0 down after half an hour to lead 3-2 heading into the closing stages.

Sutton opened the scoring before Lionel Ainsworth notched a brilliant individual effort to put Well in charge, but Jordan Forster (43), Michael Nelson (76) and Paul Heffernan (79) turned the match on its head before the late drama.
