Fabio Capello has left his post as England manager in the wake of the Football Association's decision to strip John Terry of the Three Lions' captaincy for a second time.
Here, we look at the sequence of events that led to the Italian's departure.
February 3: FA strip Terry of the captaincy in the wake of allegations he racially abused QPR defender Anton Ferdinand, allegations he denies. Chairman David Bernstein says Terry would not "captain the England team until the allegations against him are resolved". Capello was not involved in the discussions that led to the decision.
- Later that day Chelsea manager Andre Villas-Boas says he disagrees with the decision and insists the defender will continue to captain the Blues.
February 5: Capello gives an interview with Italian broadcaster RAI in which he states his anger at the decision. When asked whether he agreed with the move, he says: "No. Absolutely not."
February 6: Capello comes under fire for his comments. Former FA chief executive David Davies suggests they could be deemed as a breach of contract, former England boss Graham Taylor claims his comments could cause a rift in the England camp, and Professional Footballers' Association chief Gordon Taylor brands the Italian's comments "bizarre". Sir Alex Ferguson backs the former AC Milan manager, however, saying: "There's nothing wrong with having an opinion".
February 7: Villas-Boas then defends Capello, saying: "He has the right to his opinion and to share that defence with the player."
February 8: Capello, Bernstein and FA general secretary Alex Horne meet at Wembley. The Italian resigns from his position.
