Stuart Pearce: Urged places to make most of call-up

The England Under 21 boss named Tottenham defender Steven Caulker and Liverpool midfielder Jonjo Shelvey in his squad for next Thursday's friendly against Romania at Wycombe followed by a clash with Austria in Brighton four days later.

Wilfried Zaha, at Crystal Palace on loan from Manchester United, receives a striker's berth along with Blackpool's Tom Ince for the warm-up matches which are Pearce's last chance to finalise his plans for the championship which commences on June 5 in Israel.

England have group matches against Italy, Norway and hosts Israel, and Pearce said: "From our point of view we have two games on home soil and with the seniors being away from home that was important.

"It gives me my final opportunity to have a good look at the squad before finally naming my team for the championships and going into the Israel training camp in the summer.

"This will be probably my last opportunity to look at the players going into the finals. We are very excited by it and the good run of form that we are on."

England Under 21 Squad: Amos (Man Utd), Butland (Birmingham), Rudd (Preston), Steele (Middlesbrough); Bennett (Norwich), Caulker (Tottenham), Clyne (Southampton), Dawson (Bolton), Lees (Leeds), Robinson (Wolves), Rose (Sunderland), Shaw (Southampton), Smith (Millwall), Wisdom (Liverpool); Carroll (Tottenham), Chalobah (Watford), Henderson (Liverpool), Lansbury (Nottm Forest), Lowe (Blackburn), McEachran (Middlesbrough), Shelvey (Liverpool) Sterling (Liverpool), Townsend (QPR); Delfouneso (Blackpool), Ince (Blackpool), Sordell (Bolton), Wickham (Sunderland), Zaha (Crystal Palace).
