John Terry: Ended England career in 2012

England need the direction and leadership of John Terry at a tournament like the World Cup, his former Chelsea team-mate Salomon Kalou has said.

Kalou, now at French side Lille, believes his former skipper at Stamford Bridge would have a positive impact on the England team, on and off the field.

Kalou told Fox Sports Asia: "A player like Terry in the team changes a lot of things - not only on the pitch but off it.

"He is someone who is always working hard and giving advice and helping his team-mates.

"I think that he is a great leader. If you (England) want to go to this type of competition you have to take people that will bring a positive aspect to the team and I think that JT can bring that to the England squad.

"There is a lot of young players in the team so you need a leader like him who can direct those young players."

There would need to be a number of changes of heart for Terry to rejoin the England set-up, with manager Roy Hodgson repeatedly stating the side had moved on and were looking to the future.

The 33-year-old Chelsea captain ended his England career in September 2012, accusing the Football Association of making his position within the international set-up "untenable" following its pursuit of a racism charge against him.

Terry failed to hold down a regular place in the Chelsea side last year, but he has starred for the Blues this term following the return of manager Jose Mourinho.

Such performances as the one in Monday's win at Manchester City have led to talk of a return, but it is understood Terry stands by his original decision to retire from international football and has no plans to come back.

It is understood that Terry's stance has not changed since he said "the door is closed" on his international career last month.
