Shane Long: Looking to prove his worth

Shane Long plans to get his head down at West Brom and make himself a guaranteed starter for the Republic of Ireland at Euro 2012.

The Baggies forward was forced to sit out Ireland's play-off victory over Estonia through injury, denying him the opportunity to revel in the celebrations which greeted their qualification.

Ireland are now readying themselves for their first appearance at a major international tournament in 10 years, and the country is counting down the days.

Long admits the players are just as excited about gracing next summer's European Championship as the fans, with many having never appeared on such a stage.

The opportunity to shine in Poland and Ukraine is providing the motivation for all of those hoping to force their way into Giovanni Trapattoni's 23-man squad.

Long is no different and acknowledges that he must catch the eye at club level if he is to fulfil his ambition of playing a leading role for Ireland at Euro 2012.

"Obviously there is a long way to go until we get there next summer," he told Sky Sports News HD.

"It's going to be a hectic summer. The whole of Ireland is looking forward to it, not just us as players.

"I need to prove my worth here with West Brom until the end of the season and make sure my name is on the team sheet for Poland."

Ireland have been drawn in Group C for next summer's tournament, placing them alongside reigning world and European champions Spain, 2006 world champions Italy and Slaven Bilic's Croatia .

here has only been 3 players who made me hold my breath in dread when they picked the ball up anywhere near our penalty area...in their prime Scholes and Giggs... and always Drogba. Awesome player who on his day was the best striker in the world in my opinion.

I

remember him scoring a 25-yarder, either the season just gone or the one before, against Bolton at the Reebok. I've never seen a ball hit that hard before in my entire life. You could almost feel the shockwave from his foot contacting it 40 yards away in the stands. Didier Droga. You might not have loved him, but you just had to be in awe of him.

den Hazard, def. - 1) that girl in a club who makes eyes at you all night, who allows you to buy her a drink and walk her home arm in arm, who then gives you a suggestive kiss on her doorstep before declaring how tired she is and how she has to be up early the next day. 2) A cock tease.
