Kit Symons: Set to take Wales role

Kit Symons appears set to become part of Wales' manager Chris Coleman's backroom staff, although a deal has yet to be agreed with the Fulham academy coach.

Coleman, 41, was named as Gary Speed's successor last week and hinted that he would look to bring in his former Fulham and Wales team-mate, but added that he needed to speak to Speed's assistants Osian Roberts and Raymond Verheijen before making a decision over the composition of his coaching team.

Press Association Sport understands that Symons is likely to join up with Coleman, and that the 40-year-old will combine his current club duties with his role in the national set-up.

Coleman had said at his unveiling: "I have a very close friendship with Kit.

"He's doing a great job at Fulham with their under-18s. He's very highly thought of there.

"Like any manager, every job I've taken I've not gone in with a big axe, sacking people, but at the same time I like to bring in faces I know."

Roberts could be set to retain his role within the Wales set-up after revealing earlier this week that he had held "positive talks" with Coleman.

But Coleman has yet to hold talks with Dutchman Verheijen, who had been outspoken in his belief that he and Roberts should remain with Wales.

Coleman later admitted that he is looking to add Symons to his staff.

"I've spoken with Kit," Coleman told BBC Sport.

"I will be looking to bring in Kit in some capacity and I think Kit will add to us.

"The players will respect Kit and will like him. He brings different qualities.

"I need someone that I know and I've got tremendous trust in him.

"That's not to say we're looking to lose anybody but I think it is safe to say we are looking to do something with Kit."

here has only been 3 players who made me hold my breath in dread when they picked the ball up anywhere near our penalty area...in their prime Scholes and Giggs... and always Drogba. Awesome player who on his day was the best striker in the world in my opinion.

I

remember him scoring a 25-yarder, either the season just gone or the one before, against Bolton at the Reebok. I've never seen a ball hit that hard before in my entire life. You could almost feel the shockwave from his foot contacting it 40 yards away in the stands. Didier Droga. You might not have loved him, but you just had to be in awe of him.
