Mourinho hopes Rooney is 'happy'

Jose Mourinho remains as hungry as ever to build another all-conquering team and expressed his admiration for England and Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney.

The Portuguese coach, 50, had a few more grey hairs than the first time he was unveiled as the new Blues boss back in 2004, and has since added another Champions League trophy and Spanish title to his already impressive CV.

Mourinho signed a four-year contract at Chelsea following his departure from Real Madrid and has never hidden his love for the Blues, whom he led to successive league titles in 2005 and 2006 - not to mention the FA Cup and League Cup twice.

Mourinho believes he is "more mature" now than when he proclaimed himself the 'Special One' but his desire to win more silverware at Stamford Bridge is stronger than ever.

While the new Blues boss feels it is normal to expect a couple of new signings - Napoli's £30million-rated striker Edinson Cavani could well be the first - there were also words of encouragement for the likes of Belgian duo Romelu Lukaku and Kevin De Bruyne, who appear set to figure very much in the new manager's plans.

"It would be easier if we did that (buy a lot of expensive players), but we don't want to do that," said Mourinho, determined to take the squad on following the efforts of interim manager Rafael Benitez, who secured third place and also the Europa League trophy.

"We are happy to go with these fantastic, talented boys.

"We are happy to show that the investment Chelsea made in recent seasons.

"We want to go in this direction.

"The one or two we may buy are complements because the structure and philosophy is this one."

Chelsea has been suggested as a possible destination for Rooney, should the England forward, who has handed in a transfer request, be sold by Manchester United this summer.

While being careful not to be seen as talking up a possible big-money move, Mourinho revealed his admiration of the 27-year-old.

"He is at a fantastic age, for a player, he has maturity, big experience and is still young," he said.

"It is up to him and what he wants, what makes him happy.

"He is a little bit like me: he doesn't need one more pound in his contract, one more cup won't make a difference.

"Where is he happy? Where will he find more happiness to have ambition and drive him? I like him as a boy. I wish him well and hope he is happy."

I

t's why Mourinho is so successful. He gives players a specific, limited set of functions to perform. They are but a cog in a machine. Do no more, do no less. I assume he learnt it from LvG :)

really hope that someone in the mainstream media spots that the Bayern manager played for and managed Barcelona quite well, and thinks to mention it in the build up. That would be really interesting.
