Leighton Baines: Wants Everton to turn draws into wins

David Moyes' side still harbour ambitions of qualifying for the Champions League and remain in contention for the FA Cup.

However, their form has stuttered of late, with only two wins from their last six Premier League games leaving them six points adrift of fourth-placed Tottenham Hotspur.

They were also taken to an FA Cup fifth-round replay by Oldham Athletic, after conceding a 95th-minute equaliser in a 2-2 draw at Boundary Park.

Baines believes the Merseyside club must now start turning draws into wins, beginning with their trip to Norwich City on Saturday.

The England full-back told the Liverpool Echo: "If we want to achieve something, draws are not going to cut it. We have to find ways to get games won.

"Sometimes it may not be pretty, but it is about getting games won. We have got to keep clean sheets and get people scoring.

"They are a good side, Norwich. They started the season well. We have found it tough against them and we had a tough game against them down there last season. They are strong at home."

The FA Cup draw with Oldham was a particular source of frustration for Baines, after the League One strugglers forced a last-gasp equaliser from a corner.

Should Everton win the replay at Goodison Park on Tuesday, a quart-final tie with Wigan Athletic awaits.

Baines added: "It was a bit of a shock because the goal came so late. We were disappointed because we want to go through but we have got the replay at Goodison Park and so we will fancy our chances.

"We must now pick ourselves up and go again. We can't really ask for much more than a home tie with a side who play a couple of leagues below you.

"If we lose then we only have ourselves to blame. Our destiny is in our own hands.

"We have got to look forward now. We would have liked more from the last two games but we still believe we can achieve something. The games coming up are very winnable."

I

f he can find the right player? Surely the manager of one of Europe's top clubs has a well-researched short-list and has a good idea of who he wants to bring on-board? If I can find the right player sounds like someone going out on Saturday night on the pull, and the nearer you get to midnight the lower your standards drop.
