Coventry City have agreed to hold discussions with Gary Hoffam about a potential takeover of the club.
The former club vice-chairman was unsuccessful in a takeover bid last August, but the lifelong fan has now had a formal proposal accepted.
Current owners SISU are coming under increasing pressure from fans to sell the club, despite saving Coventry from administration in 2007 and again in early 2011.
Around 200 supporters held a protest at the Ricoh Arena during their 2-1 FA Cup defeat by Southampton.
SISU have repeatedly said that they will not sell up completely and are only looking for co-investment.
However this latest development shows they are at least willing to hold talks with Hoffman.
Coventry chief executive Tim Fisher told the club's official website: "We have had a proposal letter from Gary Hoffman and his associates looking to discuss the future of the club.
"We have agreed to meet in the near future to talk through both their intentions and plans and to share our own plans for the future of Coventry City.
"We will devote appropriate time and effort to these discussions - but it will not distract us from our ongoing efforts to improve things on and off the field."
