It Was 15 Footballing Years Ago Today...

...That yet another false dawn in English football arrived, as the national side stormed to victory in the European Youth Championships. Also, the football pools buy the fixtures and Leeds go wrong...

July 25, 1959: The agreement that established one of the silliest rules in football is devised. The football pools promoters agree to pay for the use of the fixture lists, after the Football League won a legal judgement stating that the list was copyright. Therefore, it is still illegal to publish the full fixture list without a license - even clubs have to sign an agreement to publish them in their own programmes.

July 25, 1993: One of the many 'golden generations' of English football delivers promise that it never lived up to by winning the European Under-18 Championships as hosts. One Robbie Fowler bagged an impressive five goals in the tournament, inlcuding a hat-trick in a 5-1 win over Spain to secure England's place in the final. Captain Darren Caskey - that's captain Darren Caskey - scored the winner in a 2-1 win over Turkey in the final at the City Ground, leading to years of unabated success and dominance for the senior side. Hang on, that's not right...

July 25, 1996: The High Court approves Caspian Group's takeover of Leeds United. A year later they appoint Peter Ridsdale as chairman. Which didn't exactly go according to plan.

And On This Day In Real History...
1917: Saucy minx and super-spy Mata Hari is sentenced to death for espionage.

1943: Benito Mussolini is forced to resign as Italian dictator. A couple of years of imprisonment later he was executed, then his body was hung upside down by meathooks in Milan.

1946: America begin their mission to rid the world of 'weapons of mass destruction' by detonating an atomic bomb at Bikini Atoll in the Pacific.

And At Number One...when the England youngsters were doing their thing was 'Pray' by Take That.
