Luuk de Jong netted a hat-trick as FC Twente crushed Groningen 4-1 on Sunday to replace AZ Alkmaar in second place in the Eredivisie on goal difference.
AZ were surprisingly beaten by Roda JC on Saturday, meaning a convincing victory for Steve McClaren's side on Sunday put the sides level on 39 points and comfortably ahead on goals.
De Jong scored twice in the opening 23 minutes to put his team in control at the interval, adding his third after Virgil van Dijk threatened to bring the visitors back into it with his 47th-minute effort. Leroy Fer completed the scoring in the 67th minute.
John Guidetti scored a hat-trick as Feyenoord dished out a 4-2 spanking to defending champions Ajax at De Kuip.
Feyenoord have been very much in the shadow of their rivals in recent years but they were 2-1 up at the break as Guidetti struck twice, including one from the spot, to cancel out Christian Eriksen's opener.
Otman Bakkal extended the lead five minutes after the break before Dmitry Bulykin pulled one back 10 minutes from the end, but on-loan Manchester City striker Guidetti struck again three minutes later to steal the headlines.
Lasse Schone's first-half double earned NEC Nijmegen a 2-0 victory which lifts them above opponents ADO Den Haag in the Eredivisie table.

Wesley Verhoek hit the post from ADO's best opportunity but the home side continued to have the majority of the chances and claimed a comfortable win
RKC Waalwijk thumped VVV Venlo 4-0 to pull away from the drop zone and deepen the relegation fears of their opponents.
Evander Sno put them ahead from the penalty spot in the 29th minute and Frank van Mosselveld doubled the lead two minutes later.
Robert Braber then added a third with 10 minutes to go before Rick ten Voorde capped the win late on.
The dramatic victory came only a week after RKC were on the wrong end of a 5-0 scoreline against FC Twente.
On Saturday AZ's 2-0 defeat against Roda JC at the Parkstad Limburg Stadion meant PSV Eindhoven remained top of the table following their 3-1 win over Vitesse Arnhem on Friday night.
Sanharib Malki put Roda in front in the 10th minute, with Mads Junker adding the second goal 12 minutes before half-time.
Elsewhere on Saturday, Bas Dost bagged his 17th goal of the season in Heerenveen's 2-0 home win over FC Utrecht.
Dost netted with a header after 12 minutes and Jeffrey Gouweleeuw scored the second two minutes later as Heerenveen keep up their bid for a place in Europe.
Heracles Almelo piled the misery on Excelsior with a 3-0 triumph over the bottom team at the Polman Stadion.
Ben Rienstra opened the scoring in the 18th minute and Kwame Quansah doubled the hosts' advantage nine minutes later.
Glynor Plet then ended any hopes of an unlikely comeback by the visitors with a third goal four minutes after the interval, although Heracles had to play for most of the second half with 10 men after the 53rd-minute dismissal of Lerin Duarte.
Struggling De Graafschap were left to rue their luck after their 1-1 draw at NAC Breda.
The visitors took a surprise lead through Michael de Leeuw after eight minutes, but found themselves pegged back four minutes later courtesy of Anthony Lurling's strike.
Thereafter it was De Graafschap who had the better chances but they hit the woodwork twice and found NAC keeper Jelle ten Rouwelaar in good form.
On Friday night, Tim Matavz set PSV on their way with the opener just past the half-hour mark, but they had to wait until late on to secure the victory.
Dries Mertens doubled the lead for the home side on 76 minutes, but Mike Havenaar set up a tense finale when pulled one back for Vitesse seven minutes from time.
