Sergio Aguero says it was always “the idea” to return to Independiente when his contract at Manchester City runs out.
The Argentina international joined Atletico Madrid from Independiente in 2006 and he scored 101 goals in 234 matches for the Spanish before heading to the Premier League.
And 11 years after leaving his homeland, Aguero has been talking about a possible future return in 2019 if he doesn’t take up his option of another year at City.
“It came out that Milan and Real Madrid wanted me and – I don’t know where I read it – but they said: ‘They just spoiled Independiente’s dream’,” he said while on international duty.
“But the idea was always to go back to Independiente when my contract with City runs out in 2019.
“I have an option to extend one more year with City where it’s the priority but it’s always an option.
“The idea is to go back.”
