Xabi Alonso has recounted his time playing under Jose Mourinho at Real Madrid.

Alonso spent five successful years in the Spanish capital after joining from Liverpool in 2009, three of which came under Mourinho’s management.

Mourinho masterminded a La Liga title victory over Pep Guardiola’s brilliant Barcelona side in 2012, with Alonso at the heart of his side.

Mesut Ozil was also a key player at the Bernabeu during this period, before leaving in 2013 to join Arsenal.

Reports state that Mourinho is eager to link up with the German once again at Manchester United, however.

And quotes from Alonso about how Real played under Mourinho at their peak offers insight as to why the Portuguese is chasing a player who will be available for free in the summer.

“There were phases of the game when we were not dominant, but we were in control,” Alonso told Ecos del Balon. “For example, there was a feeling that every corner against us was a chance for us. When we countered…

“With Mesut, who seemed weak but could carry the ball 30 yards brutally, Cristiano [Ronaldo] ran up the opposite side knowing that he would get the ball at the end of the move, and Karim [Benzema] and ‘Fideo’ [Angel Di Maria]. Pure power.”
