Sol Campbell thinks Arsenal may have to follow Manchester United’s example from last season and qualify for the Champions League by winning the Europa League.
The Gunners currently sit in fifth position in the Premier League table, one point off fourth-placed Liverpool but a massive 15 points adrift of leaders Manchester City.
Arsene Wenger’s men are in action against Bate Borisov on Thursday and Campbell has called on the Gunners to take the Europa League seriously like the Red Devils did last term.
“I think the main priority [for Arsenal] is to get back into Champions League … they need to get back into the big time,” the former Arsenal defender told ESPN.
“They might have to do it the Man United way — win the Europa League. Hopefully they can do that, but it’s not easy.”
The Gunners lost 3-1 to United in an epic encounter in the Premier League on Saturday in which they created chance after chance but Campbell thinks they need another two defenders to become challengers.
“They’ve done pretty well overall,” he added.
“If they can build on that performance against Manchester United – but cut out the first 10 minutes – they’ll be OK.
“But Arsenal are two defenders short of being a top team.
“They really need to push the boat out and buy a couple more players.”
