Arsenal already have ‘wheels in motion’ to offer a new contract to their Spanish international right-back Hector Bellerin, according to the most connected Gunners journalist in the national press.
The Daily Mirror’s John Cross says that ‘defender Bellerin has caught the Spanish champions’ eye this summer after an impressive season’ and that Arsenal will move to keep Bellerin, even though his current contract does not expire until 2019.
Bellerin, a recent call-up to Spain’s Euro 2016 squad in place of the injured Dani Carvajal, has impressed since breaking into the Arsenal first team midway through the 2014/15 season, despite the Arsenal coaching staff and many fans believing he cannot strictly defend.
The 21-year-old spent eight years at Barcelona since joining the club as an eight-year old in 2003, and is expected by many to eventually return to the club, akin to the situation involving former midfielder Cesc Fabregas, who rejoined the Spaniards after leaving as a youngster.
The report in the Daily Mirror also suggests that both Mesut Ozil and Alexis Sanchez are close to signing new Arsenal deals.
