Alexis Sanchez is still getting mocked by the rest of the Arsenal squad for his failure to push through a move to Manchester City during the summer transfer window, according to Chuba Akpom.
The Gunners forward looked set to join the Citizens in a £60million transfer on deadline day only for the move to collapse as the north London club couldn’t find a replacement in time.
The Chilean has only started two Premier League matches this season and has failed to find the back of the net yet, although he did score in the Europa League.
And Akpom has given an insight into the Arsenal dressing room’s reaction to his last-minute move falling through.
“We do banter about it to be fair but at the end of the day, he’s still at Arsenal,” Akpom said.
“Everyone is happy, the fans are happy and he’s happy. I think with a player like Sanchez he just blocks it out because all he wants to do is play football.
“He’s so focused on football, he blocks out a lot of negativity and transfer rumours.”
Akpom admits he wants to “emulate” the 28-year-old and is grateful for Sanchez’s support in his development.
“I’m always talking to Alexis, he’s like a mentor to me,” Akpom added.
“He’s always telling me to believe in myself and he told he believes in me a lot and I should keep working hard.
“When you’re talking to one of the best players in the world and he’s saying he believes in you then that’s going to give you a boost.
“I’m just trying to emulate everything he does.”
