Atletico Madrid president Enrique Cerezo is “optimistic” that the La Liga side will land Chelsea striker Diego Costa before the end of the transfer window.

Costa has fallen out with the club after Antonio Conte let him know that he was no longer part of his plans at the end of last season reportedly via a text message.

The Spain international, who is currently on strike and refusing to return to Chelsea training, is keen to return to Atletico Madrid.

The Blues signed Costa from Atletico in 2014 for £32million and the west London side are hopeful that they can get a return on what they paid for Costa.

So far the clubs have failed to agree a fee for the striker but Cerezo is confident that they can still sign Costa before the close of the window.

“[Costa] has a contract with another club, it’s a complicated matter,” Cerezo said.

“We are taking things with ease. As long as Chelsea do not agree to his transfer, Costa will be [a] Chelsea [player].

“Am I pessimistic or optimistic regarding the arrival of Costa? I am always optimistic.”
