Barkley ‘wouldn’t get a game at Spurs’ – Merson

Paul Merson has advised Ross Barkley not to join Tottenham – because he “isn’t going to get a game”.

Barkley has been linked with a move away from Everton for the best part of a year, with his contract at the club expiring next summer.

The Toffees are thought to want as much as £50million for the England international, which is understandably being baulked at by most sides.

Tottenham are one of few clubs seriously interested in the midfielder, but claims on Wednesday morning could scupper a deal.

It has been reported that Barkley is demanding £150,000 in wages, which would shatter Tottenham’s existing structure.

Merson, speaking to talkSPORT, doesn’t even believe the 23-year-old would start under Mauricio Pochettino.

“The World Cup is next year, it’s the ultimate for any footballer,” Merson said.

“He needs to play this year. He isn’t going to get a game at Spurs.

“Ross needs to play this year. If you’re playing week in week out, you have a chance to go to the World Cup.”
