Basel youngster Dimitri Oberlin has claimed he rejected a move to Manchester United back in 2014.

The 20-year-old is currently spending the season on loan at Basel from Austrian side RB Salzburg and has been impressing this campaign with five goals in ten appearances.

Real Madrid and Juventus are reportedly interested in the Swiss forward after he turned heads with a wonderful goal against Benfica earlier this month.

And Oberlin has now revealed that there was interest from the Red Devils back in 2014 but he preferred to gain more first-team football.

“Yes, they (United) had been watching me – the transfer almost happened,” Oberlin said.

“In the end I decided otherwise. My parents had allowed me to transfer, but I did not.

“I would have started at the U18, the way into the first team would have been far. The competition would have been massive.”
