Oliveira Jones handed Benfica a one-goal advantage in their Champions League last-16 tie with Zenit St Petersburg.

A disappointing game looked set to end goalless until its dramatic final moments, when Zenit left-back Domenico Criscito was sent off for a second bookable offence.

Moments later Jonas grabbed the only goal of the game when he met Gaitan’s free-kick with a header which beat visiting goalkeeper Juri Lodygin.

Zenit had the better of the first half action with Konstantinos Mitroglou having an effort ruled out for offside and Hulk also going close to breaking the deadlock from a free-kick.

Home keeper Julio Cesar denied Axel Witsel twice at the start of the second half while Lodygin produced a good save at the other end to keep out a good chance for Gaitan.
