Brown: Allardyce England exit ‘like a bereavement’
Phil Brown says Sam Allardyce’s exit as England manager is “almost like a bereavement”.
Allardyce was filmed by undercover Daily Telegraph journalists posing as Far East businessmen as he offered advice on how to circumvent FA rules on third-party ownership as well as offering his services for £400,000 on top of his £3m-a-year salary.
He left his post as England boss on Tuesday evening by ‘mutual consent’, and Brown, who served as his assistant at both Blackpool and Bolton, has been saddened by his exit.
“I was absolutely shocked and surprised, but when the dust settles, it’s almost like a bereavement,” he told ITV. “I really did believe he was the man to take England forward.
“His style would rustle a certain amount of feathers in the hierarchy.
“I think it was underhand, the way it was done. I honestly think there should be a law against that, if truth be known.
“But he [Allardyce] knows he’s let himself down.”
