Cameroon boss goads Joel Matip and other absentees
Cameroon boss Hugo Broos goaded Joel Matip and seven other players who refused to play for their country after the Indomitable Lions won the Africa Cup of Nations.
Broos’ Cameroon beat Egypt 2-1 in the final to claim their fifth Africa Cup of Nations title, sealing a result that few thought would be possible ahead of the tournament.
Eight players pulled out of the squad, including Liverpool’s Matip and Allan Nyom of West Brom.
Cameroon won the final after goals from Nicholas Nkoulou and Vincent Aboubakar cancelled out Mohamed Elneny’s first-half opener.
Broos wasted little time after the game to pass comment on those who opted not to join the national side.
“There was a lot of trouble before, players who wouldn’t come with us,” he said.
“OK, it’s their decision. But maybe they are saying now to themselves, ‘S***! Why didn’t I go with them?’
“We came here and I think nobody thought we would go so far.”
