Liverpool midfielder Emre Can has admitted that he was told by Jurgen Klopp last year that he would be signing Joel Matip.
Klopp became an admirer of Matip’s talents during his time as Dortmund manager and the German-born defender has been a long-term target ever since.
Matip missed the first two Premier League games of the season but made his debut in the 1-1 draw with Tottenham at White Hart Lane.
And Can has revealed that Klopp told him that he always intended to buy Matip once he left Schalke’s rivals Dortmund for another club.
“Matip is very good for the side. He’s very good on the ball. He was a leader at Schalke and played many years there. I think you need a player like him,” he told the Reds’ official website.

“[Klopp] said to me last year that he always said when he was at Dortmund that, when he was at another club, he would buy Matip. He liked him a lot and that’s why he brought him here to Liverpool.”
Loris Karius was another addition from the Bundesliga this transfer window and Can expects the keeper to do well in England.
“I know Loris from the national team but I didn’t play too often with him. He is a very good goalkeeper. The standard in Germany is very high and, in the last two or three years, he made very big steps in his career.
“He has been a little bit unlucky with the injury, of course, but he will come back and do very well.”
