Jamie Carragher says he is ‘biding his time’ before he follows his former Sky Sports colleague Gary Neville into management.

England coach Neville quit his TV role a fortnight ago to take up the reins with Valencia until the end of the season.

West Brom boss Tony Pulis revealed on Friday that he rang Carragher in the aftermath of Neville’s appointment to urge him to follow suit.

“I rang Carragher up afterwards and said ‘make sure you don’t wait too long to make the move (into management) yourself’,” he said on BBC Radio 5Live.

“I really want younger players who have been very good professionals to have a crack at management.”

Writing in his Daily Mail column Carragher admits that he’s in no hurry to cut his managerial teeth with Garry Monk’s fate at Swansea offering up something of a warning sign.

“I think they should have kept faith with Monk but, in fairness to chairman Huw Jenkins, he has made a lot of decisions that have served the club well,” he said.

“He will be aware, though, how important it is to get this one right.

“But the whole episode has not done anything to convince me I want to pursue a managerial career just yet. So that, Tony, is why I am biding my time!”
