Carragher: My Liverpool played just like defensive United
Jamie Carragher says that Liverpool regularly played defensive football akin to Manchester United under Jose Mourinho.
Mourinho has come in for criticism after deploying defensive tactics in order to get a point against Liverpool at Anfield on Saturday.
The visitors had one shot on target, coming in the first half, and were fortunate that Liverpool could not take one of their two gilt-edged chances. Read 16 Conclusions from the game.
Carragher believes that Mourinho’s style could be harmful to United’s Premier League title chances come the end of the season.
But the former defender insisted he has “no problem” with the tactics in theory, as his Liverpool side used to play in a similar way.
“First of all I should say I had no problem whatsoever with what Jose Mourinho did. He’s always done it and I expected it before the game,” he told Sky Sports.
“Jurgen Klopp said afterwards that Liverpool could never play like that; well maybe his Liverpool could never play like that, but my Liverpool did and we did it plenty of times and got results on the back of it.
“I think the criticism will be saved until the end of the season if results in big away games don’t improve and it costs Manchester United the title.”
