Tim Sherwood caused confusion after leaving the stands to coach from the dugout during Swindon’s 3-1 defeat to Eastleigh.

Sherwood was appointed Swindon’s Director of Football last Thursday, in what represents his first role in football since being sacked as manager of Aston Villa last year.

As part of the role, Sherwood choose team tactics, formation and starting line-ups, but Luke Williams is still recognised as the Robins’ head coach.

Swindon won their first match with Sherwood as part of the staff when they cruised to a 3-0 victory over Charlton in League One on Saturday, but his second game saw non-league Eastleigh secure a shock away win in the FA Cup.

The 47-year-old began the game watching from the stands, but he came down to the dugout after Jai Reason opened the scoring for the visitors on 16 minutes.

He was seen gesticulating and giving out team orders, but the Robins slipped further behind in front of a stunned County Ground when Andy Drury doubled Eastleigh’s lead on 35 minutes.

The non-league side made it 3-0 with a Mikael Mandron penalty late on, while former Aston Villa striker Nathan Delfouneso scored a consolation for the hosts soon after.
