Darmian discusses playing out of position for United

Matteo Darmian has discussed his feelings on playing out of position under Jose Mourinho at Manchester United.

Darmian joined United for around £12million from Torino last summer, and played each of his 28 Premier League games as a right-back.

But the Italian has enjoyed just as much game time playing on the left-hand side this campaign, starting four games each on either flank.

With Luke Shaw out of favour under Mourinho, Darmian has been handed an opportunity to impress, and the 27-year-old has staked his claim for the position in the long term.

He discussed how it feels not playing in his regular right-back role in an interview with United’s official website.

“I am comfortable playing on either side of the defence, so I have played as both right-back and left-back for United,” he said.

“The most important thing is that I am able to help the team and do my best for everyone, so I don’t mind where I play.

“For me it is quite easy to change sides from right to left. When I was younger I did work hard on my left foot to make it stronger and, even now, I think it is important to do that during the week because it is my weaker side and I know that I have to keep improving it.”
