Patrice Evra says Sir Alex Ferguson promised he would stay another five years and that Cristiano Ronaldo would re-join the club in 2013.
Ferguson retired in 2013 after winning a 13th and final Premier League title, although the Scot’s announcement that he would be stepping down in May shocked players at the time, including Evra.
Now at Juventus, Evra says that Ferguson claimed he would be at Old Trafford “for another five years,” and also that the Scot had promised an imminent return for Ronaldo, who had left for Real Madrid four years prior.
“I remember we talked maybe two weeks before [his retirement] and he said ‘Patrice, I will be here for another five years,'” Evra told the Sunday Times.
“I said ‘yes boss, let’s do it.’
“I was so convinced. He was looking younger and younger. He even told me 99 per cent Cristiano Ronaldo will come. I was like ‘wow, we are ready to bounce back and to even win the Champions League again.’”
“After that everyone knows what happened. You know when you are lost and you feel like the world is crumbling? It was a big trauma. I felt lost.”
