FT: Rep of Ireland 0-0 England

REP OF IRELAND 0-0 ENGLAND: Mercifully, the referee blows the final whistle. It ends in stalemate and it is doubtful that either manager will have learnt much from that. It is 20 years since these sides last met in Ireland and on that evidence there will be little call for an encore any time soon…

REP OF IRELAND 0-0 ENGLAND: Phil Jagielka gets in a muddle in possession just outside his own area and can be thankful that Jon Walters fouled him after he stumbled otherwise England were in big trouble.

REP OF IRELAND 0-0 ENGLAND: There will be three added minutes.

REP OF IRELAND 0-0 ENGLAND: The crowd had, understandably, appeared to drop off during the second half but they are awoken as we close in on the final whistle, giving Ireland one last encouraging roar.

REP OF IRELAND 0-0 ENGLAND: Barkley tries to feed passes into both Vardy and then Milner, McShane twice intercepts. Four minutes plus stoppage time remaining.

REP OF IRELAND 0-0 ENGLAND: Theo Walcott is on for England, replacing Adam Lallana. He goes out to the right with Vardy through the middle.

REP OF IRELAND 0-0 ENGLAND: Barkley slips as he goes to shoot and the ball trickles through to Given.

REP OF IRELAND 0-0 ENGLAND: We’re approaching the last 10 minutes and Vardy earns England a corner.

REP OF IRELAND 0-0 ENGLAND: Paul McShane replaces John O’Shea at the heart of the Ireland defence.

REP OF IRELAND 0-0 ENGLAND: Long earns a free-kick, getting his body in front of Gary Cahill who barges into him.

REP OF IRELAND 0-0 ENGLAND: England do their best to make a fool of your text commentator by creating a good opening. Barkley plays in Milner down the right channel but the challenge from Brady prevents him getting a shot away.

REP OF IRELAND 0-0 ENGLAND: Barkley fires high and wide on the turn. Still no signs of a goal being imminent it must be said.

REP OF IRELAND 0-0 ENGLAND: Robbie Brady with a lovely looking cross field pass. Sadly for him there is no one within 20 yards of it and it goes out for a throw in.

REP OF IRELAND 0-0 ENGLAND: That is Sterling’s last action as Andros Townsend replaces him. Ross Barkley also comes on, Jack Wilshere goes off.

REP OF IRELAND 0-0 ENGLAND: Sterling goes down in the area but is told to get to his feet by the referee. He is slightly fortunate to escape a booking for diving there. No contact from John O’Shea.

REP OF IRELAND 0-0 ENGLAND: Bournemouth’s Harry Arter on for his international debut replacing Glenn Whelan.

REP OF IRELAND 0-0 ENGLAND: Ireland come forward and Walters stings the palms of Joe Hart. The shot from 18 yards was straight at the England stopper though and easy enough to keep out.

REP OF IRELAND 0-0 ENGLAND: Kieren Westwood the latest Irish player to be replaced, Shay Given comes on.

REP OF IRELAND 0-0 ENGLAND: England earn another corner, it comes back out and Sterling drifts a ball to the far post. Rooney gets his head on it but can’t get enough on it and Ireland clear.

REP OF IRELAND 0-0 ENGLAND: England free-kick just outside the box, left of centre. Rooney takes it and curls it up and over the wall. There is not enough pace on it though and Westwood gathers.

REP OF IRELAND 0-0 ENGLAND: Jon Walters comes on for Daryl Murphy for Ireland.

REP OF IRELAND 0-0 ENGLAND: Sterling tees up Henderson whose shot is blocked. It comes back to Sterling who tries to bend one into the far corner but sends it well wide in the end.

REP OF IRELAND 0-0 ENGLAND: Brady free-kick is a good one and hart has to push it behind for a corner. He punches the corner clear too.

REP OF IRELAND 0-0 ENGLAND: Coleman brought down by Smalling as he bursts down the right. Free-kick in a good area for Ireland.

REP OF IRELAND 0-0 ENGLAND: Wilson caught in possession by Henderson. He plays in Rooney but the captain’s first touch is a poor one and the ball rolls through to Westwood.

REP OF IRELAND 0-0 ENGLAND: Shane Long and James McClean coming on for Ireland at half time. David McGoldrick and James McCarthy those to make way.

REP OF IRELAND 0-0 ENGLAND: Nothing comes of the corner and there goes the half-time whistle. Not much to report as both sides struggled to find any fluency. Goalless at the break.

REP OF IRELAND 0-0 ENGLAND: Half-cleared but Ireland come again and earn another corner. One added minute to be played.

REP OF IRELAND 0-0 ENGLAND: Ireland threaten now as McGeady slips in McGoldrick. His left-foot shot is deflected behind for a corner.

REP OF IRELAND 0-0 ENGLAND: Adam Lallana moves in from the left and unleashes a shot from 25 yards. It’s always on the rise though and sails over Kieren Westwod’s crossbar.

REP OF IRELAND 0-0 ENGLAND: James McCarthy goes into the book as he takes down Wilshere in the centre circle.

REP OF IRELAND 0-0 ENGLAND: Nice interplay involving Milner, Henderson and Lallana on the edge of the Ireland box but the hosts get enough defenders in the way to avert the danger.

REP OF IRELAND 0-0 ENGLAND: Bertrand goes down easily under challenge from Hendrick. Free-kick in a good position on the left for the visitors. Lallana’s cross just evades Smalling at the back post though and Ireland clear.

REP OF IRELAND 0-0 ENGLAND: Sterling stays down after Brady goes through the back of him. His one-two with Jones set the full-back away but his low cross is cut out with Henderson and Rooney waiting.

REP OF IRELAND 0-0 ENGLAND: Brady puts some pace on it, beats the England defenders but Murphy’s header is mistimed and goes wide. A decent chance.

REP OF IRELAND 0-0 ENGLAND: Good tackle by Glenn Whelan to stop Rooney breaking for England. Now Ireland have a free-kick as Wilshere brings down Hendrick. A chance for them to load the box.

REP OF IRELAND 0-0 ENGLAND: England free-kick midway inside the Ireland half for a high foot by Glenn Whelan. Lallana over the ball. He takes it short to Henderson who moves it to Wilshere. However, the Arsenal man’s chipped pass is wayward and Ireland have a goal kick.

REP OF IRELAND 0-0 ENGLAND: Lallana takes it but the whistle goes straight away for some pushing and shoving in the box. Ireland free-kick.

REP OF IRELAND 0-0 ENGLAND: Corner to England as McGeady blocks Sterling’s attempted cross.

REP OF IRELAND 0-0 ENGLAND: First opening on the match and Ireland are almost in front. Murphy gets through and stabs a shot goalwards. Hart looked to get a fingertip to it but a goal kick is given. The closest either side has come by a distance.

REP OF IRELAND 0-0 ENGLAND: Wilshere clips the ball over the top for Rooney but the flag goes up.

REP OF IRELAND 0-0 ENGLAND: The game being played in the Ireland half in the last couple of minutes as England look to build some pressure. They’ve been unable to create any real chances thus far.

REP OF IRELAND 0-0 ENGLAND: Raheem Sterling is being targeted by the boo boys so far as England look to gain the upper hand.

REP OF IRELAND 0-0 ENGLAND: McGeady gets half a yard on the left to whip in a cross towards McGoldrick and Smalling does well to put off the striker allowing Joe Hart to catch.

REP OF IRELAND 0-0 ENGLAND: Lallana’s corner comes to nothing.

REP OF IRELAND 0-0 ENGLAND: Henderson’s cross is headed out for a corner by O’Shea but we have a slight delay as Sterling is down having been caught by Brady.

REP OF IRELAND 0-0 ENGLAND: Nice combination between Henderson and Sterling before the former’s pass is just too heavy for Rooney.

REP OF IRELAND 0-0 ENGLAND: The corner just about dealt with by Joe Hart and now England have a free-kick as Hendrick goes into the back of Lallana.

REP OF IRELAND 0-0 ENGLAND: Ireland it is who look to build something, stringing a number of passes together around the back before a ball over the top finds McGeady down the left. His cross is blocked but he puts another ball in and Smalling has to put it out for a corner.

REP OF IRELAND 0-0 ENGLAND: A scrappy start as both sides struggle to maintain possession for any real length of time.

REP OF IRELAND 0-0 ENGLAND: Quick start from the hosts and then earn an early corner. And now a second. Nodded back into the danger area, Rooney clears but the whistle has already gone for an England free-kick.

REP OF IRELAND 0-0 ENGLAND: Ireland kick off and away we go.

Anthems belted out and the match is just moments away.

The teams are out and we’re ready for the national anthems…

We’re less than 15 minutes away from kick-off now and the Aviva Stadium is starting to fill up…

Of course, the FAI have been in the news all week as the FIFA scandal continues to make headlines. 90 minutes away from that distraction might be just what Martin O’Neill and his team need.

The visitors may be favourites for this afternoon’s clash but Irish fans will be confident that their side can avoid defeat, especially given it is 30 years since England won against the Republic.

So there is no debut for either Charlie Austin or Jamie Vardy. The two forwards will have to wait for their chance and hope to make an impression should they come off the bench.

The teams are in…

Roy Hodgson’s England are unbeaten in eight games this season, winning seven on the spin before a 1-1 in Italy in March. Ireland, meanwhile, drew at home to Poland in their most recent match and have lost just one of their last six – a 1-0 defeat to next weekend’s opponent’s Scotland at Celtic Park in November.

Hello and welcome to our live text commentary of today’s friendly international between the Republic of Ireland and England at the Aviva Stadium in Dublin. Both sides have important European Championship qualifiers next weekend but, given the rivalry, don’t expect either side to take it easy this afternoon. Kick-off is at 13.00 BST.
