Steven Gerrard has joked that he cannot remember who won the 2006 Champions League – as he was “still drunk” from the previous year.
Gerrard inspired Liverpool to Champions League glory in 2005, scoring as the Reds recovered from three goals down at half-time to beat AC Milan on penalties in the final.
That success heralded the start of the dominance English sides enjoyed in Europe for around five years.
The Premier League had a representative in five of the subsequent six Champions League finals, and even had three semi-finalists in the 2007/08 season.
Every English club is on course to finish top of their group for the first time since the 2005/06 season, with Gerrard unable to recall that Barcelona were the eventual winners that year.
When Gary Lineker asked the former Liverpool midfielder who had lifted the trophy in that season, Gerrard joked that, because of his celebrations 12 months prior, he could not remember.
“It has only every happened once in history when all of our teams have won their group stage – do you know when that was?” Lineker asked a BT Sport panel also including Rio Ferdinand and Frank Lampard.
“2006. You all featured for your three clubs, Manchester United, Liverpool, Chelsea and Arsenal in that particular year.
“But who won it?”
Gerrard was the first to respond, saying: “I don’t remember.”
He added: “I was probably still drunk from 2005.”
